I am a healthy eater— igenerally drink water, I take vitamins, and I usually eat natural foods.

The problem is, i am nearing 16 years old, and this has never happened before! i get mild- severe headaches after i eat something with sugar in it. This has never happened before until about 2 weeks ago. I had a fat free french vanilla caffine free coffee thing, and BAM! headache. This also happened yesterday after eating “craisins” from ocean spray. This happens if i eat pudding…etc etc etc…. + i only eat these foods in moderation…its not like im getting ” too much sugar”

My grandpa has Diabetes ( he got it later in life…not sure what age)
and im wondering if this could be what i have…. Any explanation?

Doesn’t answer your question but I used to get toothache when I ate sugary foods. Anything else didn’t matter – ice-cream, blah, blah – but a caramel/nougat/choc bar and BAM!, toothache.

What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare but potentially fatal medical condition that affects your skin and mucous membranes. SJS is most often caused by an allergic reaction to over-the-counter or prescription drugs, though it is sometimes caused by other factors like a bacterial infection. While anyone can get SJS, children develop the disease at a much higher rate than adults.

Children’s Motrin and Advil Linked to SJS
The drugs most commonly associated with SJS among children are ibuprofen-based medications, including children’s Motrin and Advil. In fact, children’s Motrin has made recent headlines after several children developed severe cases of SJS shortly after these types of medications.

According to the lawsuits filed on behalf of these injured children, one died 20 months after taking children’s Motrin and another child went blind two months after taking the same medication.

These lawsuits allege that the makers of Motrin knew that the medication could lead to SJS, but failed to warn consumers.

Symptoms of SJS

This condition begins with flu-like symptoms: a fever, cough, headache, and body aches. These symptoms are followed by a red rash that often breaks out on your face and torso, and then spreads to the rest of your body. Blisters may form inside your mouth, ears, nose and genital area.

Other symptoms of SJS include:

Persistent fever
Swelling of your eyelids and/or tongue
Red eyes
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Hives
Skin pain
Shedding (sloughing) of your affected skin

As soon as you identify any of these symptoms, you should stop taking any suspected medications to prevent your condition from advancing to the more serious toxic epidermal necrolysis.

The skin loss in toxic epidermal necrolysis is similar to a severe burn and is just as life threatening. Significant amounts of fluids and salts can seep from the raw, damaged areas. A person with this condition is highly susceptible to organ failure and infection at the sites of damaged and exposed tissues. Such infections are the most common cause of death among those with toxic epidermal necrolysis, which has a 30 percent mortality rate.

Treatment for SJS

People with SJS or toxic epidermal necrolysis are usually hospitalized. Treatment focuses on eliminating the underlying cause, controlling symptoms and minimizing complications. Any drugs suspected of causing the disorder are immediately discontinued. If possible, those with this condition are treated in a burn unit and given thorough care to avoid infection. If the victim survives, their skin will grow back on its own and skin grafts should not be necessary. Fluids and salts that are lost through the damaged skin are replaced intravenously.

The use of corticosteroids to treat SJS is controversial. Some doctors feel that administering large doses in the first few days is beneficial and others do not feel that corticosteroids should be used. These drugs work by suppressing your immune system, and this increases the possibility of infection. If an infection does develop, it can be treated with antibiotics.

Recovery after SJS can take anywhere from several weeks to a few months, depending on severity. If your case of SJS was caused by a medication, you should permanently avoid the medicine and all related medications.

Migraine Symptoms

A migraine is a severe headache usually followed by symptoms including nausea and vomiting. This would disable you in a few hours or maybe even days. The level at which this happens or even just its frequency varies.

A recent study shows that women have problems with migraines much more than men. Although its exact cause is unknown, birth control devices happen to be one of many culprits.

A good example ofsuch a birth control device is the oral contraceptives. It is because its ingredients alter the woman’s hormonal level and causes the migraine. The causecertainly is too much estrogen which is certainly put into what is already naturally produced by the body.

Besides migraine, oral contraceptives may cause medical abnormalities from uterine fibroids to breast cancer.

Sometimes, the migraine attack may occur before or after taking the oral contraceptive.

If this happens regularly, you are advised to try another method of birth control. This could be avoided though if you take it with food or milk. You should take this at the same time daily and stick with the prescribed dosage that was given to you.

Women over the age of 35 and experience migraines as a result of using birth control pills and other devices are at risk of getting a stroke. This is another reason why some institutions strongly advice females to use another thing if they don’t want to get pregnant.

Those who are diabetic, have high cholesterol levels and blood pressure are advised not to take oral contraceptives.

But there is hope. One of the newest oral contraceptives to date is Seasonal. This pill was introduced into the market in 2003 and since it makes females only experience a period four times in one year, this means fewer headaches for migraine sufferers.

But this oral contraceptive may not work for everyone. In case you suffer migraines due to neurological problems, this won’t do any good and you will have to find another birth control device.

Women may still choose to use oral contraceptives.This really is only after they are examined by the doctor and if everything looks good, he or she will prescribe a lower dose of oral contraceptives. Talking to your physician may even prevent a full blown migraine from happening since there’s really no permanent solution to stop this from happening.

But you’ll find some women who experience migraines even before they start using oral contraceptives. In fact, the frequency didn’t increase or decrease once they were around the pill but complained that the severity of the migraine got worse.

The severity of the migraine will also not go away overnight after you quit using oral contraceptives. Studies show that it will have a few months to your hormonal levels to normalize and only then will you have the ability to see an improvement.

Despite that, migraines will still happen and you will not blame it only on the pill but due to other factors such as the food you eat, stress at home or in the office, other medications that you may be taking, physical factors and changes in the environment.

So although there is a direct link between oral contraceptives and migraine, you cannot say that it is the only reason why women suffer from it more than men.
